A Journey Through Colors and Emotions
Ariane Messerschmitt is a German-French stage designer and portrait artist from Munich. In her expressive portraits, she deeply engages with the appearance and psyche of her subjects. The highly versatile and dynamic artist, who is now also a mother of three children, has trained not only in painting but also in stained glass and sculpture. From 1989, Ariane studied stage design and costume at the Munich Academy of Arts under Professors Ekkehard Grübler and Karl Ernst Herrmann. As part of her professional internship at the Paris Opera, she worked as an intern on the production of Madame Butterfly, for which Bob Wilson was the stage designer, as well as on Katja Kabanova, where Hans Schavernoch was responsible for the stage design.
Creativity
From Spark to Masterpiece
The artist is highly interested in Japanese calligraphy, with major influences from Hokusai and Utamaro, whose brushstrokes are reflected in her watercolors. She has also embraced the style of the Dutch artist Frans Hals, known for his bold brushwork and sketch-like paintings. Alongside her numerous portraits that immortalize people, she often chooses a variety of flowers as subjects for her paintings. Her domain is the macrocosm; she presents a small rose in a significantly magnified form.

Education
Unique Art Style and Technique
Ariane prefers large formats for her works, a reflection of her training in stage painting and stage design. She predominantly uses pure, unbroken colors, applying them with bold accents on the canvas. Some of her works can be described as color explosions. In contrast, her watercolors are sensitive and subtle, exuding a certain calmness.
